Gummibär (commonly referred to as Gummy Bear in English, or simply as Gummy) is a German Eurodance virtual music artist and the titular, multilingual CGI-animated character of the Gummibär series who performs a series of songs involving the character and music videos that are now regularly uploaded to the YouTube platform, better known by his debut worldwide hit song I Am A Gummy Bear, where Gummibär made his first appearance. The character was created to accompany the song composed by Christian Schneider and was designed by Pete Dodd.[21]

He is featured as a joyful, energetic, and childlike gummy bear who is the protagonist of the series, and is typically portrayed as someone who loves to sing and dance. Although he often appears alone in most of his performances, he is usually also accompanied by Kala, a martial arts expert female cat, and Harry, a male scientist chamaleon, who have appeared in most of Gummibär's latest animated music videos and are depicted as his best friends with whom he hangs out the most.

As a result of his particular performance of singing and dancing, his immense popularity has led him to reach the top of charts while hooking audiences, gaining over millions of views on the YouTube platform, recording a number of albums in which he stars in, including I Am Your Gummy Bear and La La Love To Dance, and releasing a large number of related products such as compact discs, DVDs, toys, food, etc. Gummibär has influenced and been referenced in popular culture on numerous occasions, and has a large online presence on the Internet.

Creation and development[]

In late 2005, a Serbian-born music composer Christian Schneider was at a restaurant in Germany while he was enjoying a beer, where he met a female bartender. In a whimsical moment, she referred to him as her gummy bear. Taken aback, Christian initially responded with disbelief, uttering, "No... what?". However, in the very next moment, he playfully retorted, "I'm your gummy bear". This simple interaction sparked a brilliant idea in Christian's mind, and he promptly recorded a tune on his old Sony Walkman.[8]

Christian would later begin working on the concept of the Gummibär character along with the lyrics, composition, and sound recordings of the song.[23] Meanwhile, Pete Dodd was commissioned to create the character's design and a 30-second short animation. Pete Dodd made various concept artwork of Gummibär in different colors, such as red, blue, yellow, etc. Kim Frederiksen was in charge of creating the 3D model, using the software Softimage XSI. The music video would be animated in Denmark, and one of the producers behind Crazy Frog commissioning the work alongside other people from Germany.[22][24] The name of Gummibär derives from the same name in German of the bear-shaped gummy candies produced by the confectionery brand Haribo since 1920.

The project would eventually be known as I Am A Gummy Bear (The Gummy Bear Song), which was finally posted publicly on the YouTube platform on July 14, 2006 under the channel berlin0708[25], featuring a shortened version of the song that lasts 30 seconds with a German adaptation. Since it was uploaded, the video was quickly popularized due to the catchy and silly melody of the song, resulting in it being posted countless times to other platforms, including Mojoflix and MySpace.

Shortly after the original 30-second short video became a success, Reinhard Raith, one of the producers behind Crazy Frog, noted that there was not yet a full version of the video, comissioned 4K Animation GmbH along with Christian to work on a 2-minute long version of the video[26], now with Bernd Mittelhockamp being in charge of directing the extended scenes. While the scenes of the 30-second short were re-used for this long version, it would also feature original scenes where Gummibär travels through different locations.

In the words of Christian, Gummibär had a tough transition to having a family for the film The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa, as the character itself already had a very lovable appearance that you could not put other characters as the protagonist besides him.[8]

Voice portrayal[]

Christian "Maci" Schneider 2023

Maci Schneider voiced Gummibär in multiple songs and its related languages, including English, German, Hungarian, etc.

Gummibär's singing voice is provided by the German music producer Maci Schneider, the son of Christian, who is also involved in the arrangement and production for most songs.[8] Maci portrayed Gummibär not only in English, but also in most of other languages, including German, Hungarian, French, Polish, etc. Although Maci has provided his voice for other languages, certain exceptions exist in songs which were performed by other individuals. However, English, German and Hungarian have been the only languages that Maci was able to reprise his voice acting role in the songs.

In the film The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa, the dialogues of Gummy were instead voiced by Sonja Ball[9], replicating the voice of a chubby American kid. Despite this, Maci was still able to reprise his role for the songs that were featured and written specifically for this film. This was the first and only time where Sonja Ball participated in a Gummibär-related project as Gummibär and since then was replaced subsequently by other voice actors.

In the Gummibär & Friends animated television series, just like Sonja Ball, Gummibär was voiced by Phillipa Alexander only in the dialogues[10], but yet Maci reprised his voice acting role for the songs that were written specifically for a musical sequence in each episode. Phillipa also reprised her role for most of the supplementary material related to the series, including a set of educational videos in which Gummy gives advice to the children's audience about learning life habits and take responsibilities for an educational application named Do You Promise?, where the Gummibär character made its appearance as part of a partnership.[27] However, in Gummybear and Friends speed racing, the character was voiced by another individual whose real name remains unknown as of currently, displaying a slightly raspier voice.

Appearance[]

Physical description[]

Gummybear

Gummibär's initial appearance in the 30-second short version of I Am A Gummy Bear, originally designed by Pete Dodd.

Gummibär is a short, slightly overweight, anthropomorphic green gummy bear, who has a large black nose, thin dark brown eyebrows, and two large eyes with blue pupils, usually depicted as having varying sizes from each other. He has two rounded ears, with the right one having visible bite marks taken out of it. He appears to have four fingers on both hands and three toes on each foot, which were initially shown to have paw pads in the 30-second short version of I Am A Gummy Bear. Besides being overweight, he is also shown to have two droopy nipples, a protruding belly button, and large rear-end.

His muzzle appears to be light green and is usually accompanied by a carpet texture. In the 30-second short version of I Am A Gummy Bear, his muzzle initially appeared sugar-coated. The inside of his mouth and tongue are normally dark green and have two round, white bottom fangs. Although they are mostly depicted as green, in several Gummibär-related material they also appear red, particularly in their stuffed toy merchandise.

His size may become inconsistent in the music videos and supplemental material. In Cho Ka Ka O, he appears small, like that of real-life gummy bear candy. However, on other occasions, he appears to be the size of a young child. Despite his relatively small size, he is usually depicted to have a teenager-esque personality, despite this, his age has never been officially established[16] and is commonly shown to be unknown.

Gummibär's design has been best known as a computer-generated 3D character model, which has remained the same model base throughout the years, while being handled by different animation studios over time who have slightly modified some details from it, such as the skin materials, rig articulations and facial expressions. The subsequent models after the 30-second short appear to use an early version of the model base from the latter, judging by the lack of paws.

Clothing[]

DaGummy

Gummibär wearing his trademark clothes.

Gummibär's attire is typically shown to wear an orange Y-front underwear and white sports sneakers with an orange stripe running down the sides and an orange trim around the heel, with also white laces with gray colored rings. The colors of his trademark clothes may vary for special ocassions, whether it is in a festive subject or not. One of these examples include the Christmas-themed music videos, where Gummibär usually wears red underwear and sneakers. Gummibär has also rarely appeared with blue clothes in a couple of stock artwork.

One of the first instances where Gummibär appears with new clothes is in the 2-minute long version of the music video for I Am A Gummy Bear, where he only wears a dark red cowboy hat. In the music video for the song Cho Ka Ka O, he partially appears to wear a hawaiian skirt at the end of the video. And subsequently in the music video for Go For The Goal, Gummibär appears with football clothing that varies in some scenes, thus being the first time he appears with completely new clothing rather than wearing a simple accessory.

In the music video for the song I Am Bear, a duplicate of multiple Gummibärs are shown to have different clothes from each other inspired by popular culture clothing, including hip-hop, punk, rasta, etc.

In the Banga Man series, Gummibär appears as a caveman as an ancestor version of himself in the prehistoric era. In this version of Gummy, he only wears an orange loincloth with black spots. He also has thicker eyebrows, a hairier beard, and clump of brown hair on his head and chest, he also has a small bone attached to his hair. He appears barefoot and usually welds a wooden club as his weapon, its color varies in each music video, from being red, orange, to darker brown in Maya Banga Hey.

Personality[]

Gummibär is a friendly, outgoing, silly, happy and energetic gummy bear with a cheerful personality. He is very kind-hearted and can demonstrate on several occasions that he is a moral person who helps others in difficult situations and tries to reason with those who are in need of support. He also loves to always motivate people to smile despite the negative aspects in life. His light-hearted motivation for others is most notable in the episode "Crack a Smile", where he tries to make Fred, an inanimate statue, smile by singing a song about "cracking a smile". His happiness is particularly also shared with the rest of the world, such as animals, objects, etc.

Although Gummibär has always retained a friendly personality, he can also have boundaries in a few instances when it comes to expressing his displeasure and anger when things are not fair as he prefers. In the episode "Crosswalk Guard", Gummy goes crazy about how overly strict Harry is towards him during his job as a crosswalk guard, impeding Gummy to cross the road. It is shown that he despises wickedness and seeks to protect his friends from people who want to harm them.

Let Me Be Your Gummy Bear

A 3D render of Gummibär holding a bouquet of roses.

Providing his kindness, Gummibär can also develop a romantic side. He can directly speak to his audience by showing his love for them, this is also remarkable due to his release of songs that are predominantly focused on love, mostly based on valentine's day. He also appears to have several love interests. In the music video for La La La I Love You, he is seen meeting with a pink, tribal female gummy bear with whom he falls in love.

Gummibär is better known for his ability of performing dance moves and singing in various unusual ways. One of his most notable dance moves is him shaking his rear-end to the screen and drum with his belly in a comedic way, perhaps to make the viewer laugh, like in The Gummy Bear Song and Nuki Nuki. He also can spin with one finger and grab his belly while pointing upward with his other hand, resembling that of Michael Jackson's poses.

Despite his skills and talents, Gummibär can sometimes be silly and unintelligent. In the episode "Macaroni Plant", he thinks he can grow a macaroni plant even though it is not possible and proceeds to do an experiment of it, and "Gumphibian", where he determines to become and live as a frog for simply having a similar green color to them. He may struggle fitting into things not designed for him because of his large belly, like in the Gummy Tees commercial, where he attempts to wear a shirt properly, but it ends up looking more like a crop top.

In some of the other music videos, Gummibär is shown to be usually taking naps constantly and having weird dreams, including The Gummy Bear Song, where he wakes up on a huge pile of inanimate gummy bears at the end of the video, and Lullaby. In Cho Ka Ka O, he sees the titular video game on a television screen and suddenly falls asleep, causing him to dream that he is inside the video game.

Occupations[]

Snake Arms

A 3D render of Gummibär as a DJ doing snake arms, from Funny DJ (RƎMIX).

Throughout the animated music video series, Gummibär has been portrayed mainly as a gummy bear who is strongly interested in music. He often shows this interest by dancing, singing, playing instruments, and even working as a DJ, becoming part of the character's characterization. However, these habits have not always been consistent in all of the music videos, as he also was featured more than once working on other occupations. The activities he has been engaged in can demonstrate that Gummibär can have a lot of energy, talent and motivation at some instances.

One of the character's other activities is cooking, as he is associated with his gummy bear species. Although he is usually not used to this activity, due to his little experience in it, he always remains motivated during the process. However, his little experience can cause him to get into problems. In the episode "Ready Pancake One", Gummy is forced to work at Mr. Kronk's pancake restaurant after he and his friends were not able to pay their bills. However, due to the Mr. Kronk's haste, this causes Gummy to rush onto preparing things as fast as possible, leading him to cause chaos in the restaurant.

Despite his debatable obesity, Gummibär has also been involved in sports, including football, basketball, tennis, golf, hammer throw, pole vault, etc. These activities have been featured in their respective music videos, such as Go For The Goal, Wati Wati Wu, and King of Sports. He has also worked as a gymnast in the music video for Hands in the Air. Because of his ongoing engagement in these activities, Gummibär still mantains a good health and can show a high level of energy despite his overweight appearance.

PlaneBroke

Gummibär injured after crashing on an island while attempting to land a plane.

Gummibär has also been depicted as having the ability to drive vehicles in a professional manner, especially his trademark car by bouncing it. He has also been featured to also work as a trained pilot and do wingsuit flying. However, he is also shown to be a bit accident-prone sometimes as he can be clumsy and can get into humorous situations. In the music video for La La La I Love You, at one point he is unable to control a plane, causing him to land to the point where it crashes onto an island.

Relationships[]

Gummibär holds many relationships throughout the mainline series, and is more notable due to his friendly and kind personality. One of his closest friends are Kala and Harry, who have appeared in various Gummibär-related media and interacted with each other often. Gummy considers them to be his most loyal friends[3], as on certain occasions they came to cooperate in many situations. Despite his two friends not tolerating his unintelligent behavior and decisions at some times, Gummibär is also seen as a loyal friend.

Paperotti is one of Gummy's other friends, being the first character from a different franchise by Gummybear International interacting with Gummibär formally. Similar to Gummibär, Paperotti has a goofy personality and can be seen accompanying Gummy to his performances at times.

Gummibär is also depicted as sharing a relationship with BellyFant. Although their relationship has not been virtually shown in music videos, in some of Gummibär's social media networks on the Internet he seems to count BellyFant as one of his other friends as well.[28]

Alan has been previously considered a rival for Gummibär, the main antagonist of The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa, as Gummy was not very comfortable with Alan's cocky attitude to dominate the Earth and ruin Christmas. While both have met each other in the music video for Mr. Mister Gummibär, the film would extensively explore their relationship and reasoning. He challenged Alan to a dance off for whoever ended up winning, would get to keep Santa Claus, who has kidnapped by Alan. Alan would later reconciled for his bad actions after losing and amends for the things he took away. In Gummibär & Friends, Alan appears to now be a friendly alien and even considers Gummy as one of his old friends.

In the Gummibär & Friends series, Gummy also appears to be kind to his neighbors who live near his apartment. Granny Peters is particularly one of Gummy's unconditionally beloved neighbors, as she relates mostly by giving him one of her scientific artifacts and baked goods for him and his friends. However, she tends to keep a secret from Gummy and his friends of her extraordinary experiments.

Mr. Kronk also appears to be Gummy's grouchy rival in the animated series. He is very strict when it comes to setting his rules. Gummibär frequently goes so far as to accidentally ruin his plans which drives him into a rage.

Music career[]

For a list of Gummibär's discography, see Gummibär/Discography.

Since the well-appointed reception of his first song I Am A Gummy Bear, it allowed the character to have multiple songs released in various albums and music videos in which he is featured as the titular character. His songs are widely known for having some lyrics of absurd humor and being covers of other previously existing songs that were also popular, these covers would include I'm A Scatman, Cho Ka Ka O and Blue (Da Ba Dee). His genre of music has been associated with dance, comedy, children's music, pop, rock, novelty, eurodance and bubblegum. However, there are some songs that breach his established music style, such as Dame La Gomita, which is considered urban and dembow.

IamyourgummybearHQ

The first studio album of the brand started off with I Am Your Gummy Bear, which was internationally released on November 13, 2007. And so, other albums by Gummibär began to be released in the following years, as well as extended plays (EPs), singles and compilation albums, also appearing on other albums centered on various artists. In some countries, the brand has released exclusive albums solely for them. Most of his latest music releases are often released digitally through music streaming services such as Spotify and YouTube Music, but on other occasions, his albums are also released in a physical form as compact discs (CDs).

Although his most recent songs are targeted directly to children's audiences, there may be some exceptions. His international debut album started with covers of other known artists that were not associated with a children's audience, and some of the other songs had lightly adulterated lyrics. However, these types of lyrics were sometimes overdone, these include Touch Me and Do You Think I'm Sexy?. Regardless of these fairly controversial songs, Gummibär's music in general was originally classified as both for adults and children, in words of his creator Christian Schneider.[29]

The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa DVD

The DVD cover for The Yummy Gummy Search For Santa.

In the 2012 Christmas comedy direct-to-video film The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa, Gummibär embarks to North Pole along with Kala, Harry and Vampiro to find Santa Claus, who is reported missing on Christmas Eve. Throughout their search, they meet an alien named Alan, who is the main villain of the film, whom Gummy challenges him to a dance off in a deal that if Gummy wins, he would save Santa Claus and Christmas. The film was heavily criticized for its low quality of production, including the animation and visuals, voice acting and the lack of character development.

A second film installment was rumored to be produced shortly after the first infamous Christmas film, being titled Gummy Bear 3D: The Movie, which was scheduled to start production in 2014.[30] However, the film was eventually revealed to be a fraud and was never produced, and two of the companies that have been involved with the film shut down after being accused for misleading the public.[31]

Gummibär's latest film Gummibär & Friends: Operation Cotton Candy is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2026 and is currently in a early state of production. The film will center on Gummy, Kala and Harry being recruited by a Covert Government Agency to defeat a set of nefarious villains who are led by Dr. Verde, the main antagonist who is determined to erase everything colorful from the planet.[32]

They also interact with other characters in their town throughout the episodes, such as Mr. Kronk, who is known to be Gummy's grouchy rival, and Granny Peters, an elderly scientist who enjoys baking cookies to her neighbors and gardening.

Reception and legacy[]

Gummydisk2

Gummibär has become one of the most successful independent recording artists for the children's audience in recent years. The popularity of the character was spread in large part due to its leading music video I Am A Gummy Bear, which has amassed over 3.6 billion views on the YouTube platform and the online videos of the song are watched more than 1 million times. The brand has released CDs and DVDs in more than 40 countries and achieved platinum and gold status in more than 10 countries world-wide, where he has reached the top of the music charts. The character has spread popularity among both children and adults, and has also attracted other companies to show a significant interest in the character, including The Walt Disney Company.[33]

The character's popularity as a phenomenon has been considered by other people as a huge rival and similarity to Crazy Frog, another popular animated Internet character who is also characterized by the repetition of lyrics and singing of catchy melodies, and is well known for his successful cover song "Axel F". Both have previously shown some mutual rivalry. However, in recent years, they have now shown a more amicable relationship.

Although Gummibär has become widely popular among different audiences in a positive way, not all reception went smoothly. Both the character and his leading song I Am A Gummy Bear was also heavily criticzed for being annoying and irritating due to the simplicity and nonsense of the lyrics, and also because of how it was quickly popularized. The character's appearance was also criticized for having a "somewhat revealing design" for a song targeted primarily at children and having the customary of shaking his rear-end. Some of his older songs have also been criticzed for featuring slightly adulterated lyrics, such as him being described as a sexy person.

Furthermore, Gummibär has significantly influenced popular culture and the internet. His debut song has been referenced in various movies, television shows, and other forms of media. Even today, he remains an Internet phenomenon from the 2000s, cherished by many with a sense of nostalgia. His special way of performance has attracted several fans to form a community where they continuously support each content of the brand.

Trivia[]

  • Even though Gummibär is a male, he has previously been voiced by two female actresses; Sonja Ball and Phillipa Alexander.
  • The German dub of Gummibär & Friends is the only confirmed language to have Maci Schneider portraying Gummibär in the dialogue, aside from the songs written specifically for each episode.[34] Although his voice in the dialogue does not feature the trademark autotuned voice of the songs.
  • Gummibär was widely popular around Greece, as there was a large amount of merchandise produced and exclusive albums released solely in said country. He was also featured in a Ifantis campaign known as Parizaki Ifantis and a whole dedicated carnival was set up, as well as The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa being released in theaters.
  • The majority of members in the Gummibär community commonly associate the 14th of July as the birthdate of Gummibär, as this was one of the first sights of Gummibär's appearance in the Internet.[25] However, an official birthdate has not been stated in the mainline series as of currently.[16]
  • On the 2006 digital single I'm Your Jelly Baby, Gummibär is strangely named Jelly Baby. Most likely being a translation error from the word "Gummy Bear".
  • Although Gummibär has stated himself that he does not have bones in the show[35], there are some contradictions. In the episode “Unhealthy Selfie” at the scene where he is being electrocuted by the lightning from the sky, his skeleton can be seen for a few brief moments.
  • In the Gummibär The Gummy Bear Emojis app, there is an emoji of Gummibär showing full teeth, even though Gummibar was not meant to have additional teeth other than his only two fangs in his original design.
  • The 3D model is very inconsistent with clipping through objects, there are a few instances where his eyeballs can be seen inside his mouth, which leads to the illusion that they are his upper teeth.
  • Despite the 3D model of Gummibär has remained the same with minor modifications such as the face, materials, etc, Gummy Bear Party is one of the first instances where it features a completely redesigned appearance of the character.
  • Throughout the dialogue scenes on Gummibär: Mobile Game, it is revealed that Gummibär learned how to speak in gummy language, an ancient language that is used by the tribe of wild gummy bears.[36]
  • Gummibär's favorite color is officially confirmed to be green, just as his skin color.[37]
  • In the episode “Macaroni Plant” from Gummibär & Friends, Gummibär reveals that he loves macaroni.
